Former Pro Bowl QB Jake Plummer Weighs in on Broncos' Offense, Klint Kubiak's New Role, and 'The Cold Tub'

Former Denver Broncos Pro Bowl quarterback Jake Plummer recently shared his perspective on the team’s offensive adjustments and key personnel moves, emphasizing the critical role of continuity for young talent. Despite a season that saw the Broncos reach the AFC Championship Game, coach Sean Payton initiated changes, replacing offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi with quarterbacks coach Davis Webb.

Plummer expressed enthusiasm for Webb’s promotion, highlighting Webb’s burgeoning reputation within NFL circles, which had already led to head coaching interviews this offseason. According to Plummer, Webb’s consistent presence is invaluable for quarterback Bo Nix, especially given Nix’s unproven status entering the league. Plummer noted that a strong, trusting relationship with a quarterbacks coach, like the one Webb shares with Nix, is fundamental for vulnerability and on-field performance. Coach Payton confirmed at the NFL Scouting Combine that Webb would take over play-calling duties for the upcoming season, a move Plummer believes ensures crucial stability for Nix.

Reflecting on Nix’s performance, Plummer praised the 24-year-old’s clutch factor, citing his 24-10 record through two seasons with the Broncos, which includes eight fourth-quarter comebacks and 12 game-winning drives. Plummer stated that Nix possesses an innate “clutch gene” that cannot be coached. However, he identified areas for Nix’s growth, particularly in maintaining pocket presence, cycling through progressions more effectively, and enhancing anticipation in his throws to maximize big play opportunities. The Broncos' offense averaged 25.0 points per game last season, ranking 10th in the NFL, but Plummer believes further offensive firepower is needed, advocating for the acquisition of a physical skill player capable of making yards after the catch.

Beyond the Broncos, Plummer discussed the new head coaching tenure of Klint Kubiak with the Raiders. Having played under Klint’s father, Gary Kubiak—who Plummer credits for maximizing his skillset during his 2003-2006 Broncos stint (where Plummer compiled a 39-15 record, a Pro Bowl nod, and three playoff appearances after a 30-52 start with the Cardinals)—Plummer sees similar coaching acumen in Klint. Klint Kubiak, who recently won a Super Bowl as the Seahawks' offensive coordinator, is now poised to work with presumptive No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza. Plummer, who has known Klint since he was a senior in high school during his time with the Broncos, believes Klint will benefit from his father Gary's extensive head coaching experience, drawing parallels to Kyle Shanahan's mentorship from Mike Shanahan.

In his post-playing career, Plummer has transitioned into media, co-hosting 'The Cold Tub' podcast with former Denver teammate Nate Jackson. While initially resistant to becoming an analyst, Plummer found his niche in a platform that delves deeper than conventional X's and O's, integrating discussions on health, wellness, and bio-hacking, topics he actively promotes, particularly the use of functional mushrooms for recovery and performance.
