Arizona Department of Gaming Unveils "Take Back the Game" to Strengthen Problem Gambling Support

The Arizona Department of Gaming (ADG) has rolled out a significant new initiative, aptly named "Take Back the Game," aimed at fostering responsible gambling practices across the state and amplifying public knowledge of its established self-exclusion program. This campaign represents a concerted effort to mitigate problem gambling behaviors among Arizona residents and raise awareness for available support mechanisms.

Leveraging a multi-channel approach, "Take Back the Game" will disseminate its message through digital platforms, television broadcasts, and radio spots. The core objective is to communicate vital responsible gambling principles and prominently feature the availability of the state-run self-exclusion mechanism, specifically designed as a protective measure for consumers. The campaign highlights potential risks associated with gambling and empowers individuals with the option to proactively manage their gaming activities by enrolling in self-exclusion. Individuals who identify as at-risk or are already experiencing negative impacts from gambling can enroll for predefined periods of 1, 5, or 10 years.

Jackie Johnson, the Department Director, provided historical context regarding the program's evolution. She noted, "Arizona first launched a voluntary self-exclusion program in the early 2000s as a tool for residents to opt out of visiting tribal casinos if they decided gambling was negatively impacting their well-being and becoming problematic." Over the subsequent years, the ADG has systematically expanded the program’s scope. Most recently, this expansion has integrated event wagering and fantasy sports, reflecting the department's ongoing commitment to broaden consumer safeguards in the evolving local gambling landscape.

Upon successful enrollment in the self-exclusion program, participants are barred from accessing specified gambling platforms for the entirety of their chosen exclusion duration. The ADG meticulously maintains and updates a comprehensive list of restricted operators, ensuring that vulnerable individuals cannot access websites or services that might exacerbate their difficulties.

Further bolstering the campaign's outreach is a dedicated Public Service Announcement (PSA). This "Take Back the Game" PSA is a concise, thirty-second video available in both English and Spanish, specifically crafted to guide viewers through the process of accessing and enrolling in the self-exclusion program.

While this robust self-exclusion framework signifies a crucial stride towards responsible gambling and offers considerable support, the persistent challenge posed by unregulated online gambling websites remains. These platforms frequently operate outside of state regulations and continue to target, sometimes directly, vulnerable players, underscoring the ongoing complexities in achieving comprehensive consumer protection across the entire digital gambling ecosystem.
