Bet365 Discontinues UK Horseracing Sponsorships Amidst Tax Structure Changes

Leading online gambling operator Bet365 has confirmed its decision to withdraw financial backing from several significant UK horseracing events. The company attributes this strategic shift to recent adjustments within the United Kingdom's tax framework, a development initially brought to light by the Racing Post earlier this week.

The immediate impact of Bet365's withdrawal will be felt across key fixtures, most notably affecting the Old Newton Cup and the Lancashire Oaks, both held at Haydock Racecourse. Furthermore, the firm will discontinue its sponsorship of the Craven meeting at Newmarket, an event that has benefited from its support for an extended period.

Many of these sponsorship agreements have represented a long-standing commitment, with some partnerships having spanned over 23 years, signaling a profound and historic engagement with the sport. A statement released by Bet365 to the Racing Post described the decision as "very difficult." The company elaborated, stating: "While these have been long-standing and much-valued partnerships, last year’s Budget has unfortunately required bet365 to make some tough commercial choices." Despite these changes, Bet365 reiterated its ongoing connection to racing, affirming: "bet365 has been a long-standing supporter of racing and will continue to be so. It remains an important part of our business, and one which is hugely enjoyed by our customers."

Bet365's move aligns with a broader trend observed within the racing sponsorship landscape. Earlier, competitor Coral similarly concluded its sponsorship of the prestigious Cheltenham Festival, with BetMGM subsequently stepping in to assume the role of the new backer.

The rationale provided by Bet365 has, however, faced scrutiny from certain quarters. Industry observers and commentators have raised questions regarding the direct impact of the cited tax increases on horseracing wagers, suggesting that these specific bets may be largely unaffected. Such perspectives have led to speculation concerning the underlying motivations behind Bet365's strategic withdrawal from these partnerships.

In response to Bet365's announcement, The Jockey Club issued a statement expressing gratitude for the extensive partnership and consistent support the operator had provided over many years, acknowledging the positive collaboration that has now drawn to a close.
