Illinois Lottery Champions Problem Gambling Awareness During March Campaign

The Illinois Lottery has announced its robust participation in Problem Gambling Awareness Month (PGAM) for March, joining a national movement aimed at increasing understanding of gambling-related harms and highlighting crucial support resources for at-risk individuals.

To effectively implement these efforts, the Illinois Lottery has forged a strategic partnership with the Illinois Council on Problem Gambling (ICPG). This collaboration is designed to strengthen both organizations' shared commitment to prevention and early intervention strategies for individuals experiencing gambling-related difficulties.

Central to the Lottery's outreach is its targeted campaign, titled "Don’t Struggle in Silence: Call 1-800-GAMBLER." This initiative seeks to empower vulnerable consumers, urging them to contact the helpline if they begin to recognize signs of problematic gambling behavior.

While lottery products are generally considered lower-risk, the Illinois Lottery maintains a firm dedication to consumer protection. Harold Mays, Director of the Lottery, commented on this commitment, stating, "Working alongside the ICPG and our extensive network of nearly 7,000 retail partners, we are focused on equipping our players with the necessary resources for responsible gaming. Lottery games are designed to offer entertainment and winning opportunities, simultaneously contributing vital funds to K-12 public education and various special causes throughout Illinois. Upholding responsible play is fundamental to achieving this overarching mission."

Throughout March, the Lottery will be disseminating comprehensive responsible gambling messages and information. Dave Wohl, ICPG Executive Director, lauded the Lottery's proactive engagement. He underscored the increasing necessity for accessible resources and open dialogue concerning problem gambling, particularly as regulated gambling options continue to expand. Wohl emphasized, "Individuals facing these difficulties do not need to confront them in isolation. Illinois residents have access to complimentary and confidential support services, available 24/7." He strongly encouraged anyone experiencing challenges to utilize these resources promptly.

The Illinois Lottery's campaign also strives to destigmatize problem gambling, fostering an environment where open conversations are encouraged. This aims to empower individuals requiring assistance to come forward and access the crucial support pathways vital for their recovery. The 1-800-GAMBLER helpline serves as a cornerstone of this support, providing immediate, free, and confidential assistance around the clock.

This statewide effort mirrors broader national industry commitments to responsible gaming. Notably, BetMGM and MGM Resorts have collectively pledged over $1,000,000 towards various responsible gaming initiatives, extending their support not only during PGAM but also continuously through 2026.
