Illinois Secures First Mega Millions Jackpot of 2026 with $536M Payout

The multi-state Mega Millions lottery has crowned its first jackpot winner of 2026, with a single ticket sold in Illinois matching all winning numbers to claim a substantial $536 million prize. This significant payout, alternatively valued at $245.6 million in its cash option, concludes a prolonged period of rollovers that extended for over three months.

The winning numbers drawn on Tuesday, comprising white balls 16, 21, 30, 35, 65, and the gold Mega Ball 7, aligned perfectly with the lone ticket. This notable victory represents the 17th time a Mega Millions jackpot has been won or shared by a player in Illinois since the game's inception. It is also only the second occasion in the game's history where the initial jackpot of the year was not secured until March.

Prior to this recent Illinois triumph, the Mega Millions top prize had last been hit on December 2, 2025, by a lucky player in New Jersey. The current jackpot run spanned an impressive 28 drawings, during which approximately 7.7 million winning tickets across various prize tiers were distributed. The aggregate value of prizes awarded during this period, excluding the ultimate jackpot, reached nearly $209.4 million.

Beyond the grand prize, the jackpot's escalation also generated considerable secondary winnings. During its progression, 18 tier-two prizes, ranging from $2 million to $5 million, were awarded to players across 13 different states. Notable states among these included New York, Minnesota, Maryland, and Texas.

The most recent drawing, specifically, was highly productive, yielding close to 416,000 winning tickets across all prize categories. In addition to the colossal jackpot, two tickets successfully matched all five white balls to secure tier-two prizes. One of these tickets, purchased in Maryland, claimed $4 million, while another, sold in Illinois, earned an even larger $5 million.

Following the confirmation of this major win, the Mega Millions jackpot has been reset to its base amount of $50 million, or an estimated $22.9 million for the cash option. Lottery enthusiasts can anticipate the next drawing, scheduled for Friday, March 13, 2026. Historically, Friday the 13th has proven to be a particularly auspicious date for the Mega Millions game, with seven jackpots having been won on this specific day since its launch in 2002.
