Kalshi Witnesses Substantial Market Share Gains Against Sports Betting Giants, According to Sensor Tower Analytics

A recent analysis conducted by Sensor Tower, a prominent mobile app intelligence firm, indicates a significant shift in the online gambling landscape, with prediction market platform Kalshi demonstrating substantial growth at the expense of conventional sports betting companies. The report highlights Kalshi's accelerating expansion, not only during high-profile events such as March Madness but also across the broader market.

Sensor Tower’s data for the first quarter of 2026 shows Kalshi capturing a 21% share of monthly active users (MAU), a considerable leap from its 3% MAU share in the first quarter of 2025. Concurrently, traditional sports betting operators experienced a decline in their market share, ranging from 1% to 6%. Furthermore, the report reveals that 11% of sports bettors in the United States engaged with Kalshi during Q1 2026, marking a notable increase from just 2% in Q1 2025. This surge in user adoption has been partly fueled by aggressive marketing efforts, with 55% of Kalshi's application downloads originating from paid promotional channels.

The platform's momentum is closely tied to major sporting spectacles, including the NFL season, the Super Bowl, March Madness, and the forthcoming NBA Playoffs. These events provide Kalshi with repeated opportunities to consolidate and expand its user base. Sensor Tower emphasized a key differentiator: "Following a very successful entry into the sports wagering arena in early 2025, Kalshi has continued to accumulate market share, often at the expense of entrenched sports betting platforms. While the expansion of traditional sports betting platforms is contingent upon the approval of U.S. state legislatures, prediction market platforms can typically operate in almost every state with minimal regulatory hurdles."

During the inaugural week of March Madness, Kalshi reported an impressive 96% increase in app downloads. This growth significantly outpaced that of leading sports betting applications: DraftKings saw a 43% gain, FanDuel recorded a 28% increase, and Fanatics experienced a 17% rise in downloads, underscoring the growing appeal of the prediction market model.

The overall industry witnessed a substantial increase in marketing expenditure during March Madness, with companies boosting advertising spending by 400% year-over-year. Interestingly, Kalshi managed to achieve its considerable gains without committing a large portion of its marketing budget specifically to March Madness promotions. In March 2026, Kalshi allocated only 1% of its marketing budget to March Madness campaigns—notably, related to a $1 billion bracket promotion, which faced objections from the NCAA. In contrast, FanDuel dedicated 3% of its budget to these promotions, and DraftKings allocated 7% during the same period. This suggests a more efficient, or perhaps targeted, marketing approach by Kalshi relative to its competitors for this specific event.
