Global Gaming Convened in Barcelona: AI, Regulation, and Responsibility Drive Record-Breaking Week

Barcelona recently hosted a record-breaking World Gaming Week, encompassing ICE and iGB Affiliate 2026, drawing global attention. Stuart Hunter of Clarion Gaming identified artificial intelligence (AI), evolving regulation, and responsible play as paramount themes shaping the future of the gambling industry.

January's events cemented Barcelona's status as a temporary global gaming hub. Verified figures revealed a record 62,988 professionals from 162 nations attended World Gaming Week, marking a 5% increase over 2025. ICE welcomed 51,996 visitors (+4%), while iGB Affiliate saw 10,992 attendees (+11%). Total visitation, accounting for visitor days, surged to 120,439, up 9% year-on-year. These milestones—exceeding 60,000 total attendance, iGB Affiliate breaking 10,000, and visitation surpassing 120,000—underscore the events' critical role in connecting industry stakeholders. Further discussions are anticipated at July's iGB L!VE in London.

Clarion Gaming expanded ICE and iGB Affiliate into a comprehensive World Gaming Week (January 18–23). This reflects an industry shift where participants seek integrated experiences beyond traditional product displays, with exhibitors and non-commercial entities hosting various parallel events. This transformation fosters deeper industry collaboration.

Regulation was a central theme at ICE Barcelona 2026. To counter illegal gambling, Clarion Gaming established a Regulatory Advisory Board, leading to an enhanced Regulator Programme offering exclusive access and private sessions. The "World Regulatory Briefing" operated under the Chatham House Rule, fostering candid discussions. Hunter emphasized ICE's role in uniting industry and regulatory bodies to cultivate a responsible and well-regulated sector.

The Sustainable Gambling Zone (SGZ) at ICE Barcelona highlighted the industry’s strategic commitment to player protection. Established in 2018, the SGZ has consistently evolved. In 2026, four safer gambling organizations—Proyecto FES, Fejar, Betblocker, and Fundación Convivir—each received a €20,000 donation. These €80,000 funds, contributing to a cumulative €462,500, were generously provided by 11 major brands, including Betsson Group, Flutter, Novomatic, and Zitro, demonstrating concerted efforts towards sustainable practices.

Artificial intelligence significantly influenced discussions at ICE and iGB Affiliate. The ICE Innovator Challenge, partnered with Microsoft, awarded Rajaraman Ramachandran of Gamucopia Creatives for his AI-driven player protection concept. Ramachandran highlighted AI's ability to identify risky player patterns early, enabling timely interventions and building trust through transparent systems. The rapid adoption of new technologies was a key takeaway.

Stuart Hunter affirmed Clarion Gaming's role in facilitating, not dictating, event agendas. All features resulted from extensive collaboration with international stakeholders. Future iGB Affiliate and ICE Barcelona editions will thus continue to explore themes identified as most pertinent by the global gaming industry.
