India Intensifies Clampdown on Unauthorized Online Gambling Platforms

India's regulatory environment for gambling remains exceptionally stringent, with most forms of sports betting and general gambling prohibited across the nation. While certain states permit specific activities such as lotteries or horse racing, the overarching legal framework has historically limited such operations.

The enforcement landscape has become even more restrictive following the enactment of the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gambling Act 2025. This landmark legislation, which became effective last year, has empowered authorities to enhance existing prohibitions, leading to a substantial increase in blocked online platforms.

In the latest wave of enforcement actions, the Indian government has imposed bans on approximately 300 websites and applications. These targeted measures, widely reported by local media outlets, specifically address online sports betting platforms, offshore casinos, and peer-to-peer betting exchanges that were operating unlawfully and actively targeting residents within India.

These platforms offered a diverse range of wagering opportunities, from betting on various sports tournaments to highly engaging casino games like slots, roulette, baccarat, and poker. The authorities clarified that these services were being provided in clear violation of the country’s existing regulatory statutes.

This recent series of blocks has significantly contributed to the cumulative figure of banned online gambling and betting websites, which now stands at an estimated 8,400. Notably, nearly 5,000 of these platforms have been added to the blacklist since the implementation of the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gambling Act 2025. This underscores the profound impact of the new legislation on the digital gambling landscape in India.

Individuals found to be involved in unauthorized gambling activities, whether as players or organizers, face severe legal consequences under India's regulatory framework. Penalties can range from substantial fines to imprisonment, reflecting the government's firm stance against such operations.

Despite the rigorous efforts and sanctions imposed by local authorities, offshore online gambling and sports betting operators continue to adapt and seek ways to reach players across India. The debate surrounding legalized gambling persists, with proponents highlighting potential tax revenue benefits, while opponents warn of significant societal risks, including financial detriment and mental health issues associated with gambling addiction.
